Past
The stories say that a great evil once had threaten the world of Siylara, but the mystical creatures rose up and put an end to it. They knew this was not the end. Other threats would try their hand at trying to gain possession of Siylara or that great evil will rise again to finish what it had started. They vowed to never see this come to pass, but they knew they could not remain constant upon the surface of the world. It was for this reason the bonded were created. They are humans whom are connected to a mystical creature on a spirit level. These humans have the powers of whatever mystical creature they are bonded to, and in extreme cases they can take the form or even call forth the mystical creature in which they are connected.
It is considered the greatest honor to be chosen, and one that many try to prove they are worthy of with dire consequences. The mystical creatures doesn't take kindly to those whom try to form a bond to them whom aren't worthy. Some say that it is the ritual itself that strike those whom aren't worthy down. Others say the mystical creature in which a unworthy is trying to bond with itself rises up and punishes the person itself for the attempt. Whatever truth, everyone knows what happen to those whom attempt the bonding whom have not been chosen. It was a fate Brynjarr's brother would have, but he would grow up believing that he was one of the chosen.
A soothsayer told Brynjarr's parents that they will have two sons. One would become a chosen of the Kirin and stories of him will echo throughout the rest of time. The second will have a heart as black as coal, but he will be struck down before the content within his heart could spread to the rest of the world. They were not told whether it would be their first born son whom will be the chosen of the kirin or their second, but when Brynjarr's older brother was born they decided that it must be him. He had a look of someone pure--the look of an angel. They decided that someone with a face as beautiful as his couldn't possibly be evil, and so they knew that their second son would be the one with a black heart.
They decided not to have a second son, but try as they might they couldn't keep their second son from being born. Within their mind, Brynjarr looked every bit the evil the soothsayer described. They only provided him with his most basic needs, but other than that they ignored him. They would not waste their time loving something that was incapable of understanding the concept. More than that they ignored the signs that their beautiful son was not as lovely as he appeared. The darkness dwelling with Brynjarr's brother revealed itself many times over, but his parents always came up with a reason for his cruelty--especially to his younger brother. They raised Brynjarr's brothers on stories of his greatest, and helped him prepare for the ritual that would bond him to the kirin.
The day of the ritual finally arrived. His brother had said he was ready, and his parents made the arrangements for the ritual. Brynjarr wanted to see the ritual take place, but his parents refused. They told him that he was not worthy. His mere presence would only insult the sanctuary of the ritual. They locked him within his room, and told him to stay there. He didn't listen, but instead found a way out of his room. He made his way to where the ritual was being preformed, and kept to the shadows--knowing perfectly well his parents would not be happy that he disobeyed their order. Yet, he could come to see that their anger was nothing compared to a mystical creature being summoned by someone for a bonding ritual they were unworthy of.
The kirin's rage radiated throughout the room. It had to be the scariest thing Brynjarr had ever encountered and it was all focused upon his brother. It was clear that the kirin intended to kill his brother. This was the fate of those whom attempted the ritual when they weren't worthy, but Brynjarr didn't want to see his brother die. He knew what his brother was. He saw and acknowledge the truth better than anyone, but he was still his brother and he loved him. He rushed forward, revealing his presence to all those whom had gathered to see the ritual take place. "Please don't kill him" The Kirin snapped her head towards him. Her? He didn't know why he decided that she was female. He had never heard of anyone assigning the mystical creatures a gender. He was always told they were beyond such constructs.
He prepared himself for the full blunt of her rage, but it seemed to have vanished when her eyes fell upon him. "You want me to spare him?" She inquired. "Please." He pleaded a second time. She considered his request for a few breaths before agreeing. Her eyes moved around the room, looking at all those whom had gathered to see a bonding ritual be complete and told them there preparation was not wasted, because standing before them was her chosen. She pointed towards Brynjarr and it was clear that some still wanted to protest--his parents especially. They couldn't believe how foolish they had been and was trying to deny it. Yet, they knew better than to argue with a mystical creature when it comes to their chosen.
There was only one person whom spoke up against the ritual and it was done after the ritual was completed. Brynjarr's brother stood in disbelief as everything happened around him. It was only after Brynjarr successfully bonded with his kirin that his brother seemed to comprehend what was happening. His destiny was being stolen for him. Oh, he didn't care if he wasn't worthy. He had great plans for the kirin's powers. Plans he wouldn't be able to take shape now that kirin had chosen to be bonded to his brother. More than that he was angry that something that belonged to him was snatched out of his grasp. He turned rage filled eyes towards the one he believed was responsible for stealing what was his from him---his brother. He attacked Brynjarr with every intention of killing him.
A wave of holy fire leapt out from Brynjarr's finger and killed his brother. He didn't mean to. He only intended to defend himself against his brother's attack, but it seemed that his newly gained powers had a will of it own. It might have been his kirin leaping to his defense. Whatever the case, he had killed his brother and he was horrified by the deed. Adding a cherry to his guilt was his parents reaction to seeing their oldest die right before their eyes. They rushed grief-stricken towards their fallen child. Brynjarr watched his parents--expecting them to turn raged filled eyes towards him. He knew they were going to blame him, and they should. It was his fault. Everything they thought about him was true. That he was a monster that destroys everything he touch. He fled before they had a chance to confirm what he already knew.

Present
He took to wandering the world for awhile, meeting many people along the way---including a few spirit bonded like him. He keeps a distance from everyone he encounter knowing that if he gets too close they will see him for the monster he truly is. It doesn't occur to him that his kirin would bond herself to someone whom has a quality of a true monster. Nor does it occur to him that someone whom is pure evil incarnated would take care of sick and wounded animals. Which he does. The small logged cabin he eventually built in the woods is filled with animals he found injured along the many journeys across Siylara.
His aloof personality doesn't allow him many friends. Most finds him off putting, and more than once he had heard them wonder how he is bonded to a kirin. They have their own idea what someone bonded to a kirin acts like, and he doesn't match that image. And it is the way he wants it. He wants to keep himself from growing to close to someone more than that he doesn't want them to get to close to him, and have their heart crushed into a million little pieces when they learn the truth.
